Paul Speer – Ax Inferno
Rainstorm Records – 2013
Multi-instrumentalist Paul Speer is back with a new album that lets his axe (guitar) d most of the talking. His guitar tone reminds me a bit of his underrated Hell’s Canyon (2000) album with Scott Rockenfield. Speer cranks up the dial on his six-string instrument to fuse together energetic rock guitar that is kind of like progressive blues. All but one of the tracks (“Tornado Warning” is 4:42) run over 5-minutes, which gives the talented musician the time to explore musical terrain like “Accelerator”, “Vortex”, “Powerglide” and “Megatron.” The last two songs are Techno Mixes of the first two tunes “Contents Under Pressure” and “Accelerator.” Axe Inferno is a might fine release from the Memphis, Tennessee based performer.
