Doro – Live @ Gramercy Theatre, New York, NY
October 20, 2014
It was magnificent to see Doro Pesch perform live again, as it had been almost 30 years since I’d last seen her in Warlock, twice back in 1986 in Germany. Thirty years was actually the occasion of this show, as the blonde haired vocalist was celebrating her Thirtieth Anniversary as the female ruler of heavy metal.
I really appreciated getting the chance to experience all the old Warlock songs that have definitely stood the test of time. A few years back, Doro won the rights back to the Warlock songs and it was awesome hearing them again. Her band came out firing with “I Rule the Ruins”, which led to “Earthshaker Rock”, “Burning Witches” and “Fight for Rock.” For a heavy metal enthusiast such as me, this was music to my ears. Truthfully I hadn’t heard those songs in probably two decades.
Speaking of Doro’s band, I couldn’t help but be impressed with the musical prowess of guitarist Bas Maas. Not only could the man kill it on guitar but brought stage presence in Doro’s own words, “A Wild Animal.” The other guitar player, Luca Princiotta played with a more subdued approach and gave the band balance. Long time Doro bassist Nick Douglas laid down the foundation with drummer Johnny Dee.
Overkill’s Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth joined Doro on stage to sing “Always Live to Win.” Getting the legendary thrash NYC vocalist up on stage was definitely a bonus and made for a killer metal duet. His distinct vocals meshed quite well with the petite German powerhouse.
Plastmatics/Voodoo X/Crown of Thorns multi-instrumentalist Jean Beauvoir joined Doro for “Burn It Up.” Beauvoir is so identifiable because of his blond Mohawk and the man knows his way around the stage.
Chris Caffery (Savatage, Trans Siberian Orchestra) was next playing with the band on “Für Immer” and “Metal Tango.” The second song has always been underrated and Caffery ripped out a solo on his flying-V guitar.
Johnny Dee’s drum solo was pretty cool and I liked when he included the beat and vocals of Kiss “I Love It Loud” to get the crowd to join with him.
Chastain, Sledge/Leather Project vocalist Leather Leone united with Doro for “East Meets West.” It was great seeing the raven haired singer on such a big stage and she is one of the most down to earth, friendly people you’ll ever meet in the metal industry.
Benedictum Vocalist Veronica Freeman brought her curvaceous power to ramp up “True as Steel.” V was rocking a school outfit and I heard many people say afterwards they were blown away with her powerful voice. This brought a smile to my face because I’ve felt that way about her since I first heard ‘Beast in the Field” in 2008.
Canadian guitarist & Annihilator mastermind Jeff Waters supplied his six-string expertise to “Revenge and a cover of “Breaking the Law.”
It was wonderful seeing everyone band together for the metal anthem “All We Are.” Every guest star, as well as members from one of the opening bands Flames of Fury, fused together as one.
Doro wrapped the show with the title track of Warlock’s second album “Hellbound.” That was the first song off the first album I ever bought from Warlock, so it really brought me full circle.
Besides seeing such a passionate show from a long time performer who truly appreciates her fans, I came away from this show with something else that really struck me. That the people there were so friendly and humble that there wasn’t one ounce of anger or hostility. This would shock people who don’t listen to heavy metal music. It says volumes about the class, dignity and humility that heavy metal fans have towards each other and the music. I’m proud to be part of that group.
People traveled from all over the globe to attend this show. Plus I saw some familiar faces, made some new friends and even got to see Veronica Freeman & Leather Leone crown Doro Pesch with a tiara as our heavy metal queen.
It was an unforgettable night.
